Overview
This article provides an overview of the Playback Room's "Class Recording" view, which you can access through the Views Tabs section. When you select this tab, the recording you chose from the Learning Path will open in the Main Panel. Below is an example of how the Class Recording view appears:
The tab's label will reflect the name of the specific recording you selected. In other words, you'll rarely see it labeled simply as "Class Recording". Instead, it will display the recording's name or, if the auto-generated value was never changed, something like "Recording 1", "Recording 2", and so on.
As you can see, the majority of the Main Panel will be occupied by the video player. There will be some tools at the top of the Main Panel and some enhanced player controls unique to Engageli's Playback room. We'll go over these details below:
- Edit Recording - This button, found at the top of the Main Panel, available only to class Instructors, can be selected to go into Edit Mode. This allows the Instructor to splice the recording to remove any portions they do not want to appear within the recording. The "Edit Recording" button is explained later in this article.
- Summary - If an AI-generated summary is available for the recorded session, this button will appear at the top of the Main Panel. Selecting this button will open a window where the session summary can be viewed. We'll go into more detail about this in the "AI Summary" section that comes later in this article.
- Open/Close Transcript - Use this button at the top of the Main Panel to display any transcript or subtitles available for the recording. When opened, the transcript appears in the Right Panel, as shown below:
With the Transcript panel open, it will automatically scroll in sync with the video. You’ll also have tools to search for specific words or phrases, plus a Download Transcript button that exports the text as a .docx file.
Note: This feature requires a subtitles VTT file to be available for the session recording. - Player Controls - At the bottom of the video player are various controls. Some are the typical controls you'll see for a video player, some will be unique to the Playback Room experience. We'll describe each of these below:
- Play / Pause - Toggle this button to play or pause the video.
- Audio Slider - Use this slider to adjust the video volume.
- Previous/Next Slide - Use these controls to move forward or backward between detected "slides" Although the content is part of a video rather than an actual slide deck, the system identifies major visual changes as separate slides. This is especially useful when an Instructor is presenting a document: each time they turn to a new page, the system recognizes the visual change, allowing you to jump directly to that moment in the recording.
- Progress Bar - This long bar lets you move to different points within the recording. It does more than simply show the video's timeline. As you watch, the bar gradually turns green to mark the portions the system has confirmed you've viewed. This is especially important if your organization tracks attendance. In those cases, make sure you watch the full recording and verify that the bar reflects complete viewing.
- Activity Pins - Above the progress bar, you'll see pins with different colors and icons. These mark moments when specific classroom activities occurred--such as a File Share or a Quick Poll. Selecting a pin will jump the recording directly to that event. Note: The colors of the pins are purely visual aids to help differentiate activity types. They do not indicate participation and cannot be used to determine whether the system recognizes that you took part in an activity.
- Play Speed - Select this to open a dropdown menu, where you can select the playback speed of the video.
- Captions - Similar to the Transcript feature, you can enable captions. The difference here is captions will appear inline with the video player, instead of within a separate panel. Select this icon to toggle captions and to modify their appearance (i.e. font color, background color, etc).
- Fullscreen - Select this icon to make the video player full screen.
AI Summary
The AI Summary is a feature where recorded sessions are ran through Engageli's AI engine and a concise summary is generated. It's especially useful for Learners who want a quick preview of the topics covered before watching the recording. For Instructors, it provides an efficient way to identify which past recordings include specific discussions--rather than scrubbing through each video, you can simply review the summaries associated with each entry.
If an AI Summary is available for the currently-selected session recording, a "Summary" button will appear at the top of the Main Panel. Upon clicking it, a window will appear, where you can review a summary of the session, as shown below:
As you hover your cursor over the various areas of the summary, icons will appear. The icons that appear will depend on your classroom role. Below, we'll go over the various icons that are available:
- Add to Notes - This is available to all participants. Clicking it will add the corresponding section as an entry to your class Notes.
- Edit - This is only available to class Instructors. Select this to edit the section title or its contents.
- Delete - This is only available to class Instructors. Selecting this will remove the corresponding section of the summary.
- + Add Section - This is only available to class Instructors. To add a new section to the summary, select this link. You'll need to manually populate the new section title and contents.
Below are notes about the AI Summary feature:
- AI summaries are generated only when the "Enable class AI options" setting is enabled for the classroom. When this setting is turned on, the system also produces a caption VTT file for each recording as part of the process.
- The AI summary is generated from the spoken audio captured during the session, along with any other parsable content--such as text included in a File Share.
- The AI summary will also be included in the email Engageli sends to all class Instructors for when a session recording is available.
Edit Recording
The "Edit Recording" button is found at the top of the Main Panel and only available to Instructors. Selecting this button will put the video player into Edit Mode, where you can trim select portions of the session recording. Below is an example screenshot of Edit Mode with the editing toolbar highlighted:
We'll describe each of the tools that appears within the bar:
- + Add Trim Markers - Upon selecting this, you'll be prompted to click somewhere in the timeline to indicate the general section of the recording that you'd like removed. After selecting on the timeline, a start and an end trim marker will appear. Drag these to encapsulate the portion of the recording you'd like removed. You may add as many trim markers as needed.
- Review Edits - Use these controls to move between your trim markers and preview how the final video will look. Note: After placing a pair of trim markers, you can immediately review the edited result by pressing Play just before the cut. The section you removed will be skipped automatically during playback.
- Clear Edits - Select this to remove all trim markers.
- Save Edits - Click this to apply your changes. There will be a processing period, but you are free to leave the page at this point. While the edit is processing, you'll notice that the "Edit Recording" button shows a "Processing Recording" label, as exampled in the below image:
Once the processing is complete, this label will change to a "Restore Recording" button. You can use this transition to confirm when the edit is done processing. - Close - Exit Edit Mode.
Below are some important notes regarding the editing of recordings:
- After you make apply edits, the "Edit Recording" button will change to "Restore Recording". Selecting this option will revert the recording back to its original, unedited version. You can also use the presence of this button as an indicator that the recording has been modified.
- Engageli does not support layering multiple rounds of edits. All changes must be completed in a single editing session. If you finish editing and later realize you missed a section that needs trimming, you'll need to restore the recording first, then redo your edits--making sure to include all necessary adjustments in that pass. There is no limit to how many times you can edit and restore a recording.
- Once a recording has been edited, all visible duration indicators will reflect the updated, post-edit length. Similarly, any MP4 download links will provide only the edited version. To view the original duration or access the unedited recording, you'll need to restore the recording to its original state.
- We recommend marking recordings that need editing to "Private" and then setting them to "Public" once the edit is complete. This will prevent your Learners from viewing the unedited version.
- If other participants have joined your Playback Room session (usually done via invitation link), you will need to wait for all of them to leave before you can edit recordings.
