This article introduces the "Sprint" view, accessible via the Views Tabs section. When selected, it will load the currently-active Sprint activity into the main panel. This tab will only appear if there is an active Sprint taking place. Below is an example of the Sprint view:
The content displayed in the main panel is divided into two parts: various indicators in the information bar at the top of the page and the details of the current question occupying the majority of the area below it. For convenience, we'll refer to these as the Information Bar and the Question Content area. The following sections explain both areas in detail and highlight elements that are visible only to certain participants.
Information Bar
At the top of the main panel is the information bar, which contains helpful features relating to the ongoing Sprint activity. We'll describe each field that appears:
- Question Tracker - Positioned on the left side of the bar, this tracker displays a format like "2/5", indicating the current question number and the total number of questions in the set.
- Mute/Unmute Background Music - If background music was enabled for the Sprint activity, this toggle--located near the left side of the bar--lets each user mute or unmute the music on their own device. Adjusting this setting affects only the individual user; others will continue to hear the music unless they mute it separately on their own machines. This toggle appears only when the Instructor has enabled background music for the activity.
- Question Timer - Centered in the bar is a countdown timer for the current question. When the timer reaches zero, participants can no longer submit an answer and the correct answer is automatically revealed.
- Points Indicator - Found near the right side of the bar, this displays the number of points you've accumulated for the Sprint activity. As Instructors cannot answer Sprint questions, only TAs and Learners will see this.
- End Sprint - Available only to Instructors, clicking this button on the right side of the bar will end the activity.
Question Content
The Question Content area occupies most of the main panel and shows the current Sprint question and, in between each one, the leaderboard. The following sections outline how this area appears from the perspectives of Staff members and Learners.
Staff View
Below is an example screenshot of the Sprint view tab from a staff member's perspective:
Within the Question Content area, Instructors and TAs will see the following: the current Sprint question, its answer options, and an indicator showing which option is correct; in between questions, the leaderboard.
Instructors also see a management panel on the right side of the container, which provides the controls used to run the activity, including advancing to the next question in the set. We'll describe each field seen within this management panel:
- Results Chart - As participants submit their answers, this pie chart updates in real time to show the proportion of correct versus incorrect responses. In between questions, when the leaderboard is displayed, this panel will display a preview of the next question.
- Stop and Reveal Answers - This button immediately ends the countdown for the current question. It's especially useful when everyone has already submitted their responses but there is still time remaining on the timer, allowing the Instructor to move forward without waiting for the countdown to finish.
- Next: Show Leaderboard - At the end of each question, Instructors should select this to proceed with the activity. Clicking this will show the current leaderboard to all participants.
- Next: Reveal Next Question - When the leaderboard is displayed, clicking this button will proceed to the next question.
- Next: Show Podium - After the last question, this button becomes available. Selecting it reveals the top three performers, along with their scores and correct answer count.
Learner View
Below is an example screenshot of the Sprint view tab from a Learner's perspective:
While a question is active, Learners choose one of the available answer options to submit their response. When the question timer reaches zero, the correct answer is revealed. Participants who selected the correct option will then see the number of points they earned.
Between questions, the leaderboard is displayed, highlighting the top three participants along with each Learner's individual position, as shown below:
When the activity concludes, the leaderboard is displayed a final time with the top three participants and each Learner's individual position:
Notes
- During the Sprint activity, class Instructors will see a label on each participant's portrait, indicating the current number of points they have accumulated. Below is an example of this via the side gallery, though it will appear when viewing user portraits in other gallery views, as well.
