Release Notes for Engageli Version 3.1.58-20260803b
Enhancements / Modifications
Classroom
The whiteboard and annotation toolbars now include a “line” and “arrow” tool, which can be used to add the corresponding object to the canvas.
A “Follow Me” control is now available to staff on both Class Whiteboards and Table Whiteboards. When enabled, it prevents learners from panning or zooming independently and instead syncs their view to match the staff member's. This helps ensure learners don’t become disoriented or "lost" on the whiteboard. Below is an example of the view from the staff member who enables this control, notice the “Leading whiteboard” indicator: For others whose views become locked to the staff member’s, this is what they will see, notice the “Following instructor” indicator:
Quiz, Polls, and Sprints now support displaying math expressions in the question and answer option fields. LaTeX syntax is utilized for this.
Instructors can now adjust the maximum number of seats per table directly from the Tables view tab.
The option to download Engageli as a web app has been removed. This is the icon that may have appeared in the browser bar when you’re using Engageli from the web browser (reference image below). This is not related to the Android or iOS app–these are still fully available and supported.
Quiz, Poll, and Sprint activities now include a "More content" indicator that alerts users when additional answer options are available but not currently visible on their screen. This improvement is especially helpful for users on smaller displays.
When participants submit responses to Polls or Quizzes that contain only a single question in the set, their answer will now appear in the corner of their portrait. This replaces the usual progress counter that shows how many questions have been answered, which will still appear if there is more than one question in the set. This update allows single‑question Polls and Quizzes to serve as effective stand‑ins for the Quick Poll feature once it is retired.
Whiteboard templates are now available in the Live Classroom. Before launching a Class Whiteboard activity, instructors can choose an existing template or start with a blank board. This enhancement applies only to Class Whiteboards; Table Whiteboards do not support templates.
A "Deprecated" label now appears on the Quick Poll activity in the Live Classroom's Present menu. In addition, the "Preview" labels have been removed from the Poll, Quiz, and Sprint activities. The Quick Poll feature will be retired in the future, so please use any of these newer activities as its replacement.
A down arrow has been added to the chat panel’s destination field to clarify that it can be expanded to change the destination, rather than functioning as a read‑only field.
We’ve revised the “Stop Recording” label to “Pause Recording” to better reflect what happens when you click the button while the recorder is active.
When using AI to generate questions for Quiz and Sprint activities in the Live Classroom, audio from video clips shared during the session is now included as a source. This applies only to video files uploaded directly to Engageli (e.g, MP4, AVI) and not to YouTube links.
In a Quiz, the File Share option under Based On will now incorporate video clips alongside the usual PDF/PPTX files.
In a Sprint, the Context option will include video clips in addition to the usual PDF/PPTX files and classroom‑captured captions.
A new “Use enhanced speech detection” option is available in classroom settings. Enabling this will improve speaking time analytics by ignoring audio that is determined to be background noise. This option is off by default. Prior to enabling it, please be note:
Local AI processing - A lightweight AI model will be downloaded and run on each participant’s device to distinguish speech from noise.
Increased CPU usage - Running this model raises the device’s processing load.
Low Capacity Mode exclusion - Participants who join in Low Capacity Mode are excluded, as their devices may not support the additional workload.
A new “Force low-capacity mode” toggle has been added to class settings. Enabling this will force all users into low capacity mode with no option to override.
The navigation bar at the top of the Poll and Quiz activities has been improved for easier paging between questions when there are a large number of them in the set.
The workflows for presenting Poll, Quiz, and Sprint activities in the Live Classroom have been improved, making it easier to save newly created question sets directly to the classroom’s Content area for future use–including saving them without needing to run the activity.
The screen for creating new Sprint question sets has been updated to align more closely with the Poll and Quiz creation screens, providing a more familiar and consistent experience across all three activities.
We have removed the “Copy invite link” feature from the Classroom Lobby page. If you need to copy an invite link to the classroom, please retrieve it from the Class Portal or, if using an LMS, instruct users to access the class through the LMS.
Sprints shown within Playback Room recordings have been redesigned to provide smoother flows and an overall improved user experience.
Additional accessibility enhancements (including a11y‑related updates) have been implemented to further improve overall usability.
The "Grade" learner feature has been retired. It previously allowed Instructors to assign grades to learners at the podium through the individual's three‑dots menu, but it saw limited use. The related “Grades” tab under the Analytics area has also been removed.
The algorithm used to measure participant speaking time has been improved for greater accuracy.
Renamed “Captions” to “Class Discussion” where applicable as it relates to sources when creating AI-generated Poll or Sprint question sets in a Live Classroom.
Removed redundant snackbar messages that appeared when starting the whiteboard activity during a Live Class.
Class Portal
The file browser pop-up that appears when importing content from other classes–whether that be within the Content area or when adding an activity to a module–will now have a search box, allowing you to quickly filter the list of classrooms.
Sprints created from the Class Portal can now utilize AI for question generation.
When using AI to generate questions for Quiz and Sprint sets, MP4 videos can now be used as sources. Previously, only PDF/PPTX documents were supported.
A dedicated “Schedule” tab now appears in the Class Portal’s left‑hand panel for managing class schedules. Previously, accessing schedule details required navigating through multiple menus, but this update brings everything into a single, streamlined location.
The classroom’s long name (i.e. description) will now appear within the Class Portal.
The Analytics > Attendance tab has been updated so that every bar in the chart now displays its full date. Previously, when multiple sessions occurred on the same day, only the first bar showed the date while the remaining bars displayed only the time. This improvement ensures each bar is clearly labeled, eliminating the need to cross‑reference other entries to determine the correct date.
The Roster tab has been enhanced with paging arrows you can click to navigate between pages of participants.
Engageli Modules now include Learning Objectives. Within the module builder area, you can specify the objectives for the module, which can be leveraged when using AI to generate a final quiz: As learners complete the module, classwide and individual reports are provided to faculty with relation to the learning objectives:
We have implemented a 10-second minimum value when setting the timer for Sprint questions.
The “Practice Pal” activity has been renamed to “Engageli Assessment”.
We’ve removed the “Enter Room URL” and “Join by Link” buttons from several areas of the Class Portal. These options were redundant and often caused confusion for users.
We’ve relabeled the “+ Add material” button under the Learning Path tab to “+ Add”.
API
The “Fetch Live Session Reports” endpoint has been improved to return more details about Polls, Quizzes, and Sprints that were run.
Miscellaneous
Added additional backend monitoring for failed LTI logins. This is in response to the major Canvas outage that occurred this year.
Engageli will soon restrict the ability to iframe the classroom, including the classroom lobby page. Although this change is not active yet, it will be enabled at any point after these release notes are published. The update is being introduced for two key reasons:
Iframing the classroom typically forces participants into a much smaller viewing area, which negatively impacts the user experience.
Loading the classroom inside an iframe often triggers unexpected errors and leads to complicated troubleshooting scenarios.
Improved backend error handling for multi-stack environments.
Implemented backend permission checks for the Quiz activity.
Enhanced the classroom archive and delete mechanisms to ensure any active Playback Room sessions are detected and terminated. As a result, users in a classroom’s Playback Room are immediately removed when that classroom is archived or deleted.
Implemented further optimizations to the class archive feature.
Fixes
Admin Portal
In multistack environments, errors would occasionally appear shortly after copying content from one classroom to another. This is resolved.
When updating site level settings via the Site Management tab, refreshing too quickly after the submission would cause an error message to appear. This is resolved.
Corrected a typo in the Interaction Controls modal window.
Resolved inconsistent capitalization with the “Interaction Controls” label throughout the platform.
Resolved issue where various AI-related settings were not displaying their proper enabled/disabled state.
Classroom
Resolved issue where participant emails–instead of their names–were appearing on Sprint leaderboards within the Playback Room.
The “Restrict editing to staff” setting was previously stored per page when annotating a File Share. This has now been fixed so that the toggle applies consistently across the entire file rather than on a page‑by‑page basis.
Resolved an issue within the Playback Room > Learning Path where video thumbnails did not always load.
Instances where the term "Quiz" appeared in Sprint activity screens have been corrected so that "Sprint" is used consistently wherever intended.
Resolved issue where errors would occasionally appear when using AI to generate the Quiz and Sprint activities.
Resolved issue where the Learning Pal panel within the Playback Room would occasionally return a “something went wrong, please try again” error.
Resolved issue where learners would encounter an error when trying to upload images to various areas of the Live Classroom, such as the whiteboard.
Resolved issue where the classroom tour feature was not properly translating some phrases if using a language other than English.
Resolved issue where closing the sign language panel failed to remove you from the list of sign language participants.
Resolved issue where the reason text as to why an answer option could not be deleted did not contain the correct description, at times. This applies to answer options within the Poll, Quiz, and Sprint activities.
Resolved issue where TAs were unable to annotate File Shares when the “Restrict editing to staff” setting was enabled.
Resolved an issue where scrolling through thumbnails in the File Share navigation panel with the mouse wheel caused the panel to snap back to its original position, effectively canceling the scroll action.
Resolved issue where annotations did not function properly if both a File Share and a Class Screenshare were active at the same time.
Resolved issue where contents added to a new whiteboard prior to starting the activity were not retained.
Resolved issue where participants in the Waiting Room were able to hear audio from video clips being shared in the Live Classroom.
The ability for Playback Room participants to initiate a Whiteboard activity from the Present menu has been removed. This control was never designed for use in Playback Rooms and, as a result, did not function as expected..
Resolved issue where File Share annotation objects lacked user attribution label.
Class Portal
Resolved issue within the Seating tab where adding tables too quickly would throw an error message.
Resolved issue where changing class settings would improperly display a “Class is locked” message to the user making the change.
Resolved issue where MKV video files could not be uploaded to the Content area, despite it being a supported format. These video files are now accepted.
An issue was fixed where content that hadn’t been prepared for use in modules was still appearing as an available source, which resulted in errors when selected. Only properly prepped content will now be shown.
Resolved issue where toggling the “Enable guest access” switch could throw an error.
Resolved an issue where the page‑navigation arrows within the Analytics area were unresponsive and did not register clicks.
Resolved issue where renaming resources under the Content area did not always apply properly.
Resolved an issue where editing existing Poll, Quiz, or Sprint activities failed to retain images uploaded during the edit. Images added while editing are now saved correctly.
Resolved some UI issues when editing YouTube videos within the module builder.
Resolved an issue where AI‑generated Sprints were limited to creating a maximum of five questions, even when more were requested and the source material contained enough content to support additional questions.
Resolved issue where uploading a PDF as the base file for a new module occasionally resulted in the PDF itself not appearing in the classroom’s Content area.
Resolved minor UI issues with pop-up windows within the module builder.
Fixed a security‑related defect in the Class Portal.
Miscellaneous
An issue was fixed where the LTI deeplink selector displayed classrooms from every LMS integration connected to the partner’s Engageli instance. It now correctly shows only the classrooms associated with the LMS in which the deeplink selector is being used.
API
Resolved an issue with the “Fetch Playback Session Reports” endpoint where the nextToken value was being omitted from the response.
