Introduction
This article walks you through uploading a SCORM file from Engageli into your Canvas course. This guide assumes that your organization has the SCORM import feature enabled for Canvas. If you are not seeing the various Canvas options described in this article, please speak with your organization's Canvas administrator.
Once you have your SCORM file exported from Engageli, please proceed with the below directions. You can review this article to learn more about exporting SCORM files from Engageli.
Step-by-Step Walkthrough
-
From the Canvas Dashboard, look for the course for which you'd like to make the SCORM file available and click it. Below is a sample screenshot of the Canvas Dashboard:
-
Once inside your course, select "Settings" from the left-hand navigation bar, as shown below:
-
From the "Settings" screen, select the "Navigation" tab, seen at the top of the page. Below is a sample image of this:
-
On the "Navigation" tab, scroll to the bottom section. You'll find a list of items currently hidden from the left-hand navigation bar. Locate the entry labeled "SCORM", then drag it into the upper list to make it visible. You can position it between other pages to control where it appears in the navigation menu. See the below reference image, showing where the "SCORM" item will typically appear.
-
Once you have placed the "SCORM" entry, apply the change by clicking the "Save" button, as shown below:
-
You should now see the "SCORM" entry in the course's left-navigation bar. Go ahead and select it. An example image has been provided below:
-
You may encounter a prompt asking you to authorize the SCORM app's access to your course. If so, click "Authorize", as shown below:
-
From the "SCORM" page, click the "Upload" button, as seen below.
-
A file explorer window should appear, allowing you to browse your computer for the SCORM file; see example below:
-
Once you have selected and submitted your SCORM file, you should see a new entry on the page, displaying the name of your SCORM file, along with a progress bar, as shown below:
-
Once the SCORM file is uploaded and processed, the progress bar will be replaced with a few options: "Choose import type...", "Preview", and "Delete".
From the "Choose import type..." dropdown, select either "Import as graded assignment" or "Import as ungraded assignment". See the reference image below, highlighting these options: -
Once you have selected your option, click the "Go" button to submit, as shown below. Processing may take several minutes, depending on the amount of material within your SCORM file.
-
Once the processing is complete, the "Go" button will disappear and you should see a caption in its place, confirming the option you chose earlier. See a sample screenshot below of the confirmation that we chose for our example, which was to import the SCORM as a graded assignment.
-
Now, click on the "Assignments" tab from the course's left-hand navigation bar, as shown below.
-
Once you're on the "Assignments" page, you should see an entry for the SCORM assignment you had just created. Click the 3-dots menu associated with it and select "Edit", as shown below.
-
In the pop-up that appears, select the "More Options" button, as exampled below:
-
On the new page that loads, mark the "Load This Tool In A New Tab" option--example image below:
-
Finally, scroll to the bottom of the page and click "Save" or "Save & Publish", whichever is applicable. A reference image has been provided below:
Review of Finished Product
You can click on the assignment you've just created to experience the SCORM content as your students will experience it. Below is a sample screenshot of the prompt that appears when clicking on the assignment, asking you to confirm that you want to open a new browser window to load the content:
Clicking on the button will open a new tab with your Engageli content, as shown below:
Notes
During the testing of the SCORM import process with Canvas, we have noticed that larger SCORM files can sometime take several minutes to process. This can often cause the page to not update properly. If you have waited several minutes during the various import and processing stages and the page does not appear to be responding, please try manually refreshing the page.
