Overview
This article explains the "Settings" button located in the Bottom Panel of the Live Classroom. You’ll find it on the left side of the panel, as shown below:
When selected, the button opens a window where you can adjust personal preferences and, if you are an Instructor, manage classroom settings. The window is organized with a column of tabs on the left. Selecting a tab updates the content displayed on the right side of the window.
At the bottom of the left-hand column, you’ll also see your organization’s current Engageli version. The screenshot below shows this window with the default "Audio & Video" tab selected:
In the following sections, we'll review every tab that appears within this window.
Audio & Video
The "Audio & Video" tab is automatically selected when you open the Settings window. From here, you can adjust your microphone, speaker, and webcam preferences.
Note: Changes made on this page only take effect after you click Save. For instance, if you choose a different webcam, other participants will not see the update until you save your settings.
Below, we'll describe each field that appears in the right-hand panel when viewing this tab:
- Webcam Preview - At the top of the panel, you'll see a preview of your webcam.
- Mirror my Video Preview - Use this toggle to turn webcam mirroring on or off. By default, Engageli enables mirroring, which flips your webcam preview to resemble a mirror image. If you'd rather view your video exactly as it's being captured, you can disable this setting. Keep in mind, this only affects your personal preview--other participants will always see your video as it's actually recorded.
- Camera - Use this dropdown to select your preferred webcam. When you choose a different device, your webcam preview will update to reflect that webcam's video feed.
-
Background Settings - Clicking this button will allow you to customize your webcam's virtual background image. You'll find the below options available to you:
- No Effects - Selecting this will turn off virtual background effects.
- Blur - This option will blur your background.
- Upload Image - Selecting this option will prompt you to upload an image from your computer to be used as your background. Image formats we support are JPG, JPEG, and PNG.
- Select Color - This checkerboard-looking option will allow you to set your background to a solid color. Once you click it, a color palette will appear, where you can select from a wide range of colors.
- Existing Images - These will be a collection of those provided by Engageli, by your organization, and any that you have uploaded yourself.
- Turn Camera On/Off - You can toggle this button to turn your webcam on or off.
- Microphone - Use this dropdown to select your preferred microphone. When you choose a difference device, the microphone audio indicator bar will immediately begin reflecting the audio coming from your new selection.
- Microphone Audio Indicator - Located to the right of the Microphone dropdown, this indicator reacts to your voice by moving in response to the volume it detects.
- Turn Noise Reduction On/Off - Background noise reduction is enabled by default. You can switch it on or off using this button. Note: This setting only affects software-based noise reduction built into the Engageli platform. If your microphone includes its own built-in noise reduction, that feature will function separately from this control.
- Turn Microphone On/Off - You can toggle this button to turn your microphone on or to mute it.
- Speaker - Use this dropdown to select your preferred speaker. When you choose a different device, you can immediately test it by clicking the "Test Speaker" button to the right of this dropdown.
- Test Speaker - Click this button to play a chime through the speakers that are selected from the dropdown.
- Cancel - To back out of your audio and video changes, click this button.
- Save - To save the changes to your audio and video preferences, click this button.
Class Configuration
The "Class Configuration" tab is accessible only to classroom Instructors. It provides a way to adjust basic classroom settings directly within the Live Classroom, without navigating back to the Admin Portal or Class Portal. Because this page would be accessed during an active session, only settings that can be changed without ending the class are available here. Any options that are hidden or disabled are those that require the session to end. Most settings remain accessible, with only a small number restricted due to session limitations:
The settings seen on this tab are a consolidation of the Common Configuration, Live Configuration, and Playback Configuration settings tabs found in the corresponding classroom's Class Details' tab within the Admin Portal. Please visit these mentioned pages to get more information about any of the settings.
Any changes made to this tab will not take effect until the "Save" button, found at the bottom-right of the page, is clicked. To back out of the changes, select "Cancel".
Advanced Settings
The "Advanced Settings" tab is functionally similar to the "Class Configuration" tab, but contains more advanced settings that not commonly modified. Like the "Class Configuration" tab, this tab is only accessible to class Instructors. These settings are placed here to avoid cluttering the Class Configuration tab's list of settings.

Accessibility
The "Accessibility" tab contains features designed to support users with accessibility needs. Below is a screenshot of the page, showing the options available:
Below, we'll provide details for the options:
-
Enable Captioning - Use this switch to turn live captions on or off. When enabled, captions will appear in a floating box on your screen, as shown in the screenshot below:
You can resize the box by clicking and dragging its corners. You can move it by clicking anywhere inside the panel and dragging it to a new position.
Above the switch, you’ll see a message recommending the use of your browser's built-in captioning service. This is because Engageli's caption feature, while helpful, has limitations. For example, it provides captions for classroom-wide discussions but does not capture table-level conversations--even those happening at your own table. Please visit this Google article to learn how to turn on captions in Chrome. - Enable Sign Language Video - Use this switch to turn on sign language video. This feature will allow designated classroom interpreters to be shown in a floating panel for all recipients who need to see them. Please review the Enabling Sign Language Support article to learn more about using this feature.
As is the case with all tabs on this page, you'll need to select the "Save" button at the bottom-right to apply your changes or "Cancel" to back out of them.
Appearance
The "Appearance" tab allows you to toggle preferences relating to way things appear in the classroom. We've provided a sample screenshot below of this tab:
We'll now describe the options that are offered:
- Application Theme - Use this switch to toggle between Light and Dark modes.
-
Application Language - Use this dropdown to choose the language in which the platform's text will be displayed. The currently supported languages are:
- English
- Spanish
- French
- Japanese
Be sure to click the "Save" button at the bottom at the bottom-right of the screen to apply your selections or click "Cancel" to back out of them.
