Introduction
Engageli offers sign language support through its comprehensive accessibility features. This guide provides instructions for both the Interpreter (the professional facilitating sign language communication) and the Recipient (the deaf or hard-of-hearing individual utilizing the service).
Instructions for Interpreters
If you're serving as a sign language interpreter for a class session, you'll need to designate yourself as an Interpreter once the session begins. The steps below will walk you through how to do this.
Important: In Live Classrooms, only users assigned the Instructor or Teaching Assistant (TA) role can designate themselves as Interpreters. In Playback Room sessions, this restriction does not apply--any participant can assign themselves as an Interpreter.
- Once you have joined the class, select the "Settings" icon at the bottom-left of the screen, as shown below:
- From the "Settings" screen, select the "Accessibility" tab to reveal the Sign Language Settings section--see the below reference image of the "Accessibility" page:
From here, do the following:- Toggle the "Enable Sign Language Video" option to enable it.
- From the "Select Interpreter" dropdown, select yourself.
- Hit "Save".
You have now designated yourself as an Interpreter. As an Interpreter, you will see a floating panel that contains the webcam video of any other Interpreters and all Recipients. Below is a sample screenshot of this floating panel as seen from the Interpreter's perspective:
If you do not immediately see the floating panel, it simply means there are not yet any Recipients or other Interpreters present in the class. As soon as one is identified, the panel will appear.
Instructions for Recipients
If you will be receiving sign language services from an Interpreter during class, please follow the below steps:
- Once you have joined the class, select the "Settings" icon at the bottom-left of the screen, as shown below:
- From the "Settings" screen, select the "Accessibility" tab to reveal the Sign Language Settings section--see the below reference image of the "Accessibility" page:
From here, do the following:- Toggle the "Enable Sign Language Video" option to enable it.
- Use the "Select Interpreter" dropdown to choose the interpreter whose webcam feed you’d like to view.
- Click "Save" to apply your change.
You have now designated yourself as a Recipient. You should see a floating panel that contains your Interpreter's webcam video, as shown below:
If you do not immediately see the floating panel, it simply means your Interpreter has not designated themselves as an Interpreter, yet. As soon as they do, the floating panel will appear.
