If you try to launch Engageli from your LMS and see an error such as "Bad LTI params received: LMS email and name are required", it means the LMS successfully sent your login request, but the required user details--specifically name and email--were not included. Engageli needs these values to match your login attempt to an existing user account or to create one if it doesn't already exist.
This issue most often appears when you're using an LMS feature that lets you view the system as another role, such as a student. These "view as" or "act as" modes are helpful for previewing the learner experience, but they do not always represent a real user account. As a result, when you click an Engageli classroom link while in this simulated role, the LMS sends no actual user information, which triggers the error.
For example, Canvas includes a "View as Student" option within course settings, as shown below:
When activated, Canvas displays a banner at the bottom of the screen indicating that you're currently acting as a student. Below is an example highlighting this banner:
If you attempt to open an Engageli link in this mode, the launch will fail because the simulated student does not have real account data such as a name or email.
Although Engageli cannot advise on how you should test your LMS, we recommend that if you need to verify behavior for different user types, you create real test accounts and log in as those users directly. This ensures that all required information is passed correctly and prevents the error from occurring.
