Overview
Low Capacity Mode is designed to protect users on slower devices by reducing certain features. This helps to ensure you can still join and participate in the live classroom without suffering major performance issues that could otherwise make the platform unusable.
You will encounter Low Capacity Mode if you’re using a device with limited processing power. This mode is triggered when your browser reports 5 or fewer logical processors.
To elaborate on what counts as a logical processor, below are some examples of how this value is counted:
- A quad-core CPU without hyper-threading = 4 logical processors.
- A quad-core CPU with hyper-threading = 8 logical processors.
You can confirm if you are in low capacity mode by looking for the Bottom Panel's "Gallery" button. If you notice that this button is disabled and hovering your mouse over it causes a tooltip of "Disabled in low-capacity mode" to appear, then you are in low capacity mode. We have provided an example screenshot below of this message:
Low Capacity Mode Experience
When you are in low capacity mode, you will notice the following adjustments:
- The "Gallery" button located in the Bottom Panel of the live classroom becomes disabled, meaning you are restricted from opening the side gallery.
- The "Class Gallery" view tab and Overlay Gallery will display a maximum of 8 participants per page, as opposed to the normal 20.
- You will be restricted from using High Bandwidth Mode.
- The quality of some videos and video streams will be reduced.
Bypassing Low Capacity Mode
If you have been placed in low capacity mode, but feel that your device is capable of running Engageli without this reduced mode, you can override it. To override Low Capacity Mode, look for the 3-dots menu near the right side of the Bottom Panel and select it. From the expanded menu, enable the "Override Low Capacity Mode" option. Below is a screenshot for reference:
Note that this is something you would need to do every time you join a class.
Troubleshooting Low Capacity Mode
Being put into Low Capacity Mode is not something user can necessarily troubleshoot--as this is a feature of the system and not a sign of something being broken. However, if you notice that you are being put into low capacity mode where you previously weren't and you haven't changed your hardware, it's possible your browser is reporting the wrong number of logical processors to our platform.
Below are some troubleshooting steps you can take:
- Try opening the classroom in Incognito or InPrivate mode.
- Try loading the classroom in another browser.
-
If you're using Brave Browser, disable the Shields/Privacy Protection settings:
- Open your classroom page to the lobby.
- Click the Lion icon on the right side of the address bar to reveal the Shields menu.
- Turn the "Shields are UP" setting off by toggling the switch off.
- Refresh the page.
-
Try disabling your browser extensions/addons and then re-enable them one at a time.
