This guide explains how to set up the closed captioning feature and enable this functionality in the Engageli classroom. Additionally, we outline how to turn on Google Chrome captions as a backup if needed.
This article includes:
- How to Enable Captions in the Admin Portal (required prior to enabling in class)
- How to Turn on Captions in Engageli
- Seeing Captions
- Playback Room Transcript
- How to Turn on the Google Chrome ‘Live Captioning’ Feature
Captions are available during a live class and transcripts can be viewed in the Engageli Playback Room. Captions only capture the instructor's audio and learners' audio on the podium or when the class is in room audio. It does not capture any conversations at individual tables during table audio. We recommend enabling the accessibility settings for both Engageli and Google Chrome.
How to Enable Captions in the Admin Portal
First, before your class, enable captions in the Admin Portal. This step ensures that users can turn on captions within the live classroom.
- Go to the Admin Portal.
- Click Classes on the left to expand the menu.
- Select your class or use the search field to find your class.
- On the Details page, click the Live Configuration tab.
- Check the box for Captions during live session.
- Check the box for Create caption vtt file when recording. [This creates the transcript.]
- Click Save Changes. Once saved, Learners, Instructors, and TAs can enable captions in the live class or playback room.
If you can't enable these settings, contact your institution's administrator. If you are the administrator and wish to have this setting enabled, please contact your Partner Success Manager or email support@engageli.com.
How to Turn on Captions in Engageli
Once inside the classroom, to enable captions for that session follow these steps. These steps apply to the Learners, Instructors, and TA roles.
Accessibility Settings
Open Settings (gear icon) at the bottom left of the screen.
Select Accessibility.
Toggle Enable Captioning to the right. You might have to wait a few moments for the captions to initialize. (Note: If this option is not available, you will need to ensure that your instructor has enabled caption settings in the admin portal.
Click the Save button.
Seeing Captions
After you’ve enabled captions on Engageli and adjusted settings for the Google Chrome Browser, you will see captions in a display that you can move around the screen.
Playback Room Transcript
When learners watch a recording of your class in a Playback room, they will see captions in the Transcription button which will open the transcript tab if a caption vtt file was created (see image below).
One clicked, users can search captions and it will show all recorded captions. Additionally, users can download the transcript if needed.
Remember that audio at tables is never recorded. Only the instructor at the staff table, anyone on the podium, all speaking in room mode, and panelists are included in the recording.
Note: If you have captions enabled, Instructors and Admins can download the transcript for the class recording in the Recordings section of the Admin Portal.
How to Turn on the Google Chrome ‘Live Captioning’ Feature
As an alternate method to enable captions, if you're using Google Chrome, this feature can be used for live classes or video playback in the Playback Room.
Go to the Customize and Control menu (three dots) in the top right corner of your web browser.
Click Accessibility.
Turn on Live Caption.
