Overview
This article explains the "Present" button, located near the center of the Live Classroom's Bottom Panel. Class participants can use this button to launch activities or other tools. There are two versions of the "Present" button: one designed for Instructors and another for non-Instructors. The Instructor version offers a wide range of options, while the version available to Learners and TAs provides only limited functionality.
In this article, we'll describe both versions and all the options included within each one.
"Present" Button for Instructors
The Instructor's version of the Present button is purple and contains an icon of an easel that's holding up a chart of a line graph. Below is a screenshot of the Present button with its menu expanded, as it appears to a class Instructor:
You'll notice a handful of icons that can be clicked to initiate activities or tools within the classroom. Below, we'll describe each of these options:
- Share Screen - This icon can be clicked to initiate a classwide screenshare. Please review the Live Classroom > Bottom Panel > Present > Share Screen article to learn more.
- Table Screen Share - This icon can be clicked to initiate a table screenshare. This functions the same way as the "Share Screen" button next to it, but the share will be restricted to just the table at which you are seated. To learn more about this button, please review the Live Classroom > Bottom Panel > Present > Table Screen Share article.
- Video Clips - The "Video Clips" option can be used to share video files or YouTube videos. Please see the Live Classroom > Bottom Panel > Present > Video Clips article for more details.
- Distribute Doc - The "Distribute Doc" option can be used to share cloud-hosted documents with the classroom. Please see the Live Classroom > Bottom Panel > Present > Distribute Doc article for more details.
- File Share - Click this icon to upload a PDF or PPTX file to the classroom for sharing. Files shared through this option are view-only and not designed for collaborative editing. Please see the Live Classroom > Bottom Panel > Present > File Share article for more details.
- Whiteboard - The "Whiteboard" option can be used to initiate a whiteboard activity, where participants draw on a shared canvas. Please see the Live Classroom > Bottom Panel > Present > Whiteboard article for more details.
- Quick Poll - The "Quick Poll" option can be used to initiate a question-and-answer activity, helping to keep users engaged. Please see the Live Classroom > Bottom Panel > Present > Quick Poll article for more details.
- Poll - The "Poll" option can be used to initiate a poll or survey question set with the classroom. Please see the Live Classroom > Bottom Panel > Present > Poll article for more details.
- Quiz - The "Quiz" option can be used to initiate a quiz activity within the classroom. Please see the Live Classroom > Bottom Panel > Present > Quiz article for more details.
- Sprint - The "Sprint" option can be used to initiate a competitive leaderboard activity within the classroom. Please see the Live Classroom > Bottom Panel > Present > Sprint article for more details.
- Timer - The "Timer" option can be used to begin a countdown timer. Please see the Live Classroom > Bottom Panel > Present > Timer article for more details.
Below are some important notes regarding the Instructor's "Present" button:
-
When an activity begins, its associated icon in the Present menu will include a "Stop" button. Clicking this will immediately stop the activity. See the example screenshot below showing multiple active activities with their Stop buttons:
- Generally speaking, only one instance of each activity type can run at a time. For example, you cannot run both the Class Whiteboard and Table Whiteboards simultaneously. Likewise, only one File Share can be active at once. There are some exceptions to this, such as table screenshares.
- While it is possible to run different activity types at the same time, we recommend keeping the number of concurrent activities limited. Running too many activities simultaneously may cause performance issues for participants, especially on slower devices.
"Present" Button for Learners and TAs
The Learner/TA version of the Present button is represented by an icon of box with an upward facing arrow within it. Below is a screenshot of the Present button, as it appears to a Learner or TA:
Similar to the Instructor's version of the Present button, this can be used to start activities, but it's very limited. Below, we'll describe the options available within the menu that expands upon clicking the button:
-
Share Screen with Class - This can be selected to begin sharing your screen with the entire classroom. Once you select this, you will be prompted to select the tab, window, or screen you'd like to share. If you need assistance with these options, please see the Live Classroom > Bottom Panel > Present > Share Screen article. Although this article is for the Instructor's version of this button, most of the workflow is the same. Once you select the item to share, the Instructor may see a prompt asking them to approve the class screenshare, as shown below:
Once the screenshare is approved, a "Class Share" view tab will become available for all participants, where they can view your screenshare. Additionally, the "Share Screen with Class" option will be renamed to "Stop Class Screen Sharing", which you can select to stop the share. - Share Screen with Table - This functions just like the class screenshare option, but the screenshare will instead take place within the table at which you are seated. When this activity is started, a "Table Share" view tab will become available to you and your tablemates. Additionally, the "Share Screen with Table" option will be renamed to "Stop Screen Sharing with Table", which you can select to stop the share.
Notes
Below are important notes regarding the Present menu and the options within it:
- Participants who join from a mobile device cannot share their screen. This limitation applies to both Android and iOS devices, whether using the Engageli app or any mobile browser. Mobile browsers do not support the technical requirements for screen sharing, and this is not something Engageli can address. Screenshare support may be added to the Android and iOS apps in the future. Participants attempting to share their screen from a mobile device may find that the screenshare options are hidden, disabled, or produce error messages. While you can view screens shared by others, you will not be able to share your own from a mobile device. To work around this limitation, you'll need to use a laptop or desktop computer.
